Athletes' foot is a common condition that occurs on the feet. It is an infection caused by a fungus. It spreads through the lymph channels and can lead to a bloodstream infection called sepsis. Treatment involves applying a cream to the affected area and keeping it moist for 7 days. The cream should be applied at least once daily, even after clearing the rash.

Symptoms

Symptoms of athletes' feet include scaling, redness, blisters, and skin breakdown. The infection is usually bacterial and can spread to the lymph system, lymph vessels, or lymph nodes. It can also lead to cellulitis, a more serious bacterial infection. Antibiotics are recommended to treat athletes' feet.

Treatment depends on the severity of the infection and the cause. A combination of good foot hygiene and an antifungal cream or powder can cure the infection in mild cases. In severe cases, an antifungal pill may be prescribed.

Causes

An athlete's foot is an infection that affects the space between your toes. It can cause painful itchiness and burning. You may notice fissures or patches spread out across your foot. You may also notice redness or pus. If the infection is left untreated, it can spread to the toenails and lymph nodes. This is a severe infection and must be treated with antibiotics.

To prevent athlete's foot:

  1. Keep your feet dry and clean.
  2. Avoid wearing tight or leather shoes.
  3. Wear canvas or cotton socks.
  4. Disinfect your shoes and socks with Clorox wipes.

Treatments

Treatments for athletes' feet can include topical or oral antifungal medications. Most are available over the counter, but in some cases, your GP may prescribe a more substantial treatment available only by prescription. These medications can also contain antibiotics. Your doctor will decide which treatment is best for your particular case and may recommend home treatments. Good home treatment may include soaking your feet in vinegar or salt water and drying the infected skin.

Treatments for athletes' feet can vary, depending on the type of infection. Fungal infection usually causes the condition, but other causes can also cause it. If left untreated, athletes' feet can lead to a more severe problem called onychomycosis, a nail infection.

Prevention

Preventing athletes' feet is vital to keep the foot healthy and fungus-free. To keep your feet clean and free of fungus, use antifungal products or clean them regularly with antibacterial soap. Avoid touching your feet with dirty or wet objects is the key to preventing athlete's foot. In addition, you should avoid wearing shoes that are not adequately cleaned.

Another essential prevention method is to wear shoes that are ventilated. These shoes should be made of breathable materials, as fungus thrives in moist areas. Also, make sure your shoes fit correctly and alternate pairs of shoes.
